James Kirby

February 24, 2017

James KirbyDuring my current placement within the City Council’s planning department I have been able to expand upon my knowledge in an area that is extremely different to my previous placements.

As a planning officer, I have been helping to assess planning applications which vary from small extensions to large advertising, including the Manchester Life site hoardings. The variety of cases has helped to develop my critical thinking in assessing whether or not the planning application should be accepted or rejected. This will only benefit me in the future when making and justifying important decisions.

I have also been lucky enough to visit a wide variety of different sites including a wide range of different listed buildings. I have visited Manchester Life’s Murrays’ Mills on a regular basis to ensure that the planning conditions of the construction are being adhered to. Assessing the construction techniques and materials used at Murrays Mills has been an enjoyable task for me whilst working for the City Council as I have seen the job progress over the last 12 months.

I feel as though I have developed many transferable skills at my previous placements and at the Council. I look forward to a new challenge at ARUP.
